A Beginner’s Guide to Picking the Right Dildo Size
A dildo may not be the first toy that comes to mind when you think about the sex toy market. After all, with all of the amazing vibrators out there with all of their multiple functions and purposes, especially the luxury ones, you may feel like you’re getting more bang for your buck with other toys.
That’s why I’m here to sing the praises of having your own dildo and guide you through what you should look for when it’s time to make your first purchase.
HOW TO CHOOSE SIZE AND GIRTH.
Dildos really do come in all sizes, shapes, and colors so don’t get lured in by a pretty picture. Think about what you want and what you think you can handle.
Let’s start with a basic geometry lesson. Circumference (or girth when we’re talking about insertable toys or penises) is the measurement around the entire toy. Diameter is the same as width. It’s how wide the toy is from side to side.
Most insertable sex toys will give you the measurements at the widest part of the toy, so keep that in mind if it’s something that tapers or that has a much larger head.
To give you a rough estimate of size, the average erect penis is 5.16 inches in length and 4.59 inches in girth. When you do the math (which I’m happy to do for many of you who don’t want to), the width is roughly 1.46 inches of an average penis.
USE A RULER TO JUDGE LENGTH
Every dildo will list its length but, more importantly, it’s the insertable length you want to know. As you may well imagine, that’s the amount of the toy that is meant to be put in your body. Before you buy that pretty 12 inch dildo, measure 12 inches against your hand or a standard water bottle. If it makes you cringe, move on to something smaller.
The image you’re seeing is of two dildos that have almost the same insertable length. Randy Vixskin in Caramel on the bottom is only 5.75 inches insertable length and has a 2.25 inch width, while the Bartender Miguel by Average Joe is 6 inches long and has a 1.56 inch width. Pictures can be deceiving. Girth makes a much bigger difference than you may think, doesn’t it? So on to my next point…
DON’T FORGET TO CHECK FOR GIRTH
Use your handy measuring tape to test circumference, width or girth against your fingers or a water bottle. You may want something that makes you feel full and stretched or you may want something completely average. Many dildos run around the 1.5 inch mark because that is the width of the average male erect penis (as we learned through the power of math earlier).
Here is our handy guideline to what a dildo width equates to (approximately) in overall girth.
WIDTH | APPROXIMATE GIRTH |
---|---|
3 INCHES | 8 TO 8.5 INCHES |
2.5 INCHES | 7 TO 7.75 INCHES |
2 INCHES | 5.5 TO 6.75 INCHES |
1.75 INCHES | 5 TO 5.5 INCHES |
1.5 INCHES | 4.5 TO 4.75 INCHES ** Average erect penis size ** |
1.25 INCHES | 3.75 TO 4 INCHES |
1 INCH | 3 TO 3.5 INCHES |

I had a question if you are able to answer.
I am a 30 year old male married to 29 year old female and I want to surprise her with a toy.
Should I get a toy bigger than my penis? This would be for fun and novelty since we have been married for 10 years.
My measurements are 6 inches length with 5.5 inches Girth. I am not the jealous type especially in regards of a toy. But I do have a tiny and probably irrational fear that it could change how her and I fit if you catch my meaning.
So how big of toy should I get her?
And any concerns with going bigger?
